Hi all,
Hope you’ve had a solid week.
This week has been super hectic for me plus there’s been a whole load of new releases.
I don’t typically share my thoughts on releases here, so it’s business as usual.
Sit back and relax, skim or something in the middle.
Let’s dive in.
Five Movements That Changed The World – Part I
Serious question.
Who are the writers at ACM?
Apart from guest articles from the likes of Tony Traina and Felix Scholz, I would love to know who writes banger after banger under “by A Collected Man”.
I’ve spent years wondering where an all encompassing article about the most significant watch movements has been, and felt I lacked the knowledge to truly do it justice myself.
And now it’s here.
Detail is on point as ever from ACM.
I won’t ruin it. You’ll need to go read it yourself, but it’s well worth it.
And as a bonus, they hope to turn it into an open ended series, meaning I’m excited to see what comes next!
You can find the full story here.
Buying, Selling, & Collecting A Collector's Guide To The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711
Firstly, image credit to James K./@waitlisted because I love James’ pictures and always look out for them in Hodinkee articles :))
Secondly, this is a mega piece from Tony.
Seeing as all eyes are on Patek again, Tony has gone and knocked it out of the park looking at the outgoing 5711 reference, breaking down the hype, the history and the various incarnations.
My favourite line in the whole piece is near the end:
It became this symbol of everything that was wrong with watch collecting, and maybe even with society if you were a very serious person.
Factos.
I’m a sucker for a reference piece, and this has certainly become the reference piece for 5711s.
Also, the Hodinkee comments section cracks me up.
Replying to a comment from Ben Clymer, ElGarbaggio writes:
Finally a Clymer-level writer in da house. But he ain't gonna buy big Pateks and befriend celebs, so he might actually stay with us Lol (sowwy, I miss ya, what can I say...)
Anyway, check the piece out for yourself here.
And congrats Tony.
In-Depth II: Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon SLGT003
Hecking heck.
Another top tier article. That makes 3.
*Inserts meme about that’s a hatrick here*
This article on SJX is detail on another level, but so are most “Knowledge” articles on SJX.
In all honestly that’s how I found this piece. The “Knowledge” section on SJX is almost as reliable as the Journal on ACM.
Back to the article at hand.
It’s an incredibly detailed piece by Sheng Lee, written in a methodical way taking you all the way through the process of how a constant force tourbillon works.
Hats off for this.
So, if you do think you’d be interested to read it, you can find it here.
Don’t worry, I know it’s not for everyone.
All is done.
I’ll be honest, I forgot to write this edition yesterday, so I’m panicking writing it right before my usual 10am deadline.
Hopefully, the quality was the same as ever (however you usually judge it to be).
Let me know your thoughts below, and as ever I’d appreciate any feedback.
Have a great weekend.
