Hello Team,
Hope you’re all doing well.
I wanted to kick things off with an honest take on writing this weekly newsletter.
Some weeks it’s a struggle to find even three things to recommend.
It’s not that three things haven’t happened in watches this week, more that there aren’t 3 things that I’d want to recommend on my current criteria.
Take this recent Hodinkee article with Kathleen McGivney for example. Super interesting read, but I wouldn’t recommend it as my Instagram feed has been full of people sharing this article.
In my sphere of the internet, you’ve been living under a rock if you haven’t seen it yet.
That’s where the challenge really lies in all of this.
I try to find 3 pieces of media in the watch world this week that you probably haven’t seen, which is paradoxical when most readers are watch people who follow me and probably read and listen to the same media as me!
So maybe I need to redefine the criteria and broaden it to things that I simply enjoy.
Every so often I enjoy going down a rabbit hole such as with the customisation newsletter, but in general, I’ll stick to a minimum of 3 recommendations weekly in your inbox.
If I feel like recommending more than 3, I might write less.
Talking Watches With John Goldberger, Part 2
This was the banker, the insurance, the one that couldn’t fail the one that never fails.
All jokes aside, super excited to open Hodinkee when writing this and find a second Goldberger Talking Watches episode.
With the idolisation of collectors (probably a debate for another day), this episode will be a success.
I really enjoyed the pieces towards the end talking about what Goldberger actually wears, but it was also great to see pocket watches (split-second minute repeater perpetual calendar pocket watches at that) taking centre stage early on.
Here’s the link if you haven’t seen it already.
Market Update: December 2022
As ever, I find myself recommending giving the Subdial Market Update a read.
This one is particularly great as it shows the whole year in review.
Look past some of the undertones of Subdial marketing and it really makes for a great read.
They’re the ones in possession of this data and it’s impressive that they’re willing to share as much as they are.
I remember saying to someone about Subdial being at a kind of crossroads between a watch dealer and a data company, however give it 5 years and more people will be trying to work this way.
They just seem so far out there now on the data side that it can be off-putting, but stepping back and look at other industries makes me suspect that it won’t just be Subdial in a few years time.
Excellently written with great flow.
You can find it here.
Hands-On With The Latest Rowing Blazers x Seiko Release
Shared this week by Fratello, this video is about a watch that I really enjoy so wanted to share it.
That’s all to it really, other than I liked how there was a more style approach towards the second half of this video that we’re starting to see across watch media.
Maybe there’s a discussion to be had around this and how the watch media is moving towards actively incorporating style into their work?
You can watch the full video here.
That’s all this week.
As ever, any comments you can write below or drop me a dm.
Have a great weekend.
