3 Watch Thursday #26
Morning team,
Welcome to all new subscribers from the last week! I hope everyone who reads this has had a good week.
Things will be a little different this week with a couple of spillover topics from last week that never made it into the newsletter.
Enjoy.
JLC Odysseus 165.7.3 S
There I was last week scrolling through Chrono24, searching for large watch brands and filtering for 1980-1989 and 1990-1999 and I stumbled across this JLC Odysseus.
My initial reaction was something along the lines of that’s a pretty watch. Scrolling through the pictures I saw this:
It’s quartz!
Admittedly this made me feel uneasy. While it’s ok looking for a quartz movement and this watch is from a period just after the so-called quartz crisis, it was unsettling because the design feels similar to popular neo-vintage pieces which tend to have beautiful mechanical movements or closed casebacks.
Maybe it’s the rise in popularity of neo-vintage mechanical watches that makes this feel odd.
I’d be really interested to hear your thoughts about this watch. Is it the only reference like it out there (surely not), and what do you think about neo-vintage quartz?

Rolex Cellini Danaos
With so much recent interest in 1980s and 1990s watches (probably due to this being when the current watch media grew up), I’d like to speculate as to what could be popular in the next 10/15 years when my generation goes out to work and starts picking up some disposable income.
Enter the weird and wild watches of the 2000s. Bigger meant better and many watches from that era are today considered gaudy.
Then I remembered the Cellini.
A pretty unpopular line of Rolex watches at present but I’d seen some pieces from the back catalogue before that interested me.
Given the variety, I think the cushion-cased Cellini watches are some of the most interesting to come out of modern Rolex. Just look at the one above listed here or the one below listed here.
Could we see these gain popularity in the medium-term future? Who knows, but they’re definitely now on my radar.
Anders (@everydaycollector) On The Mighty Rolex Midas And Collecting With Style
This week I took the time to listen to this episode of OT: The Podcast with @everydaycollector.
I’ve recommended Andy and Felix’s podcast before, but they truly do an excellent job in getting a variety of guests on board.
Prior to this I didn’t follow Andres, but now I most certainly do! His Instagram account is incredible and there’s so much more that they run through.
Go give it a listen.
That’s all for this week.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend when it rolls around and thanks for the continued support.
