Hi Team,
As ever, I hope you’re having a great week. It’s been a super busy week for me, but there was still time to collate 3 things watch-related that you might’ve missed.
Enough said so away we go!
New Faces At Hodinkee
Earlier this week we saw the big H announce 5 new editors, each bringing something different to the table. One name stood straight out to me though.
Tony Traina.
As mentioned last week, Tony was the creator of Rescapement. As one of the earliest, if not the first, watch-related newsletters, Rescapement has gone from strength to strength in the past couple of years and has now culminated in Tony going full-time into watches.
This was amazing to see, but as he mentioned in his Instagram reveal the name Rescapement will be retired and the newsletter will be used to share some BTS stuff.
Best of luck Tony, can’t wait to see what you get up to!
Check out the profiles of all of the new editors here!
A Funny Little Patent Quirk
Ok, this isn’t quite a link to an article and is tenuously watch related, but hear me out.
If you’re an inventor and you have an invention you’d like to patent, there are a few ways you can go about this.
One is to hire a patent attorney and they’ll sort everything for you. But if you were to apply yourself, there are a few ways you can do this (using the UK as the example):
Online system
Post
Hand delivery?
The first and most obvious in the modern age is to submit your application via an online portal.
Makes sense.
The second is to post your application to the UK Intellectual Property Office. A little out of date in a way.
But also makes sense.
The final way is to hand deliver your patent to the Intellectual Property Office where the security will give you a receipt showing the date as the date you applied for your patent!
This seems a little out of date to me, yet there’s a nice novelty to all of this. When you think of the many patents relating to watches originating in the early 20th century, there was an urgency to get the inventions filed in order for the company to use the invention in their products. As such, I like to think that an employee from Rolex would’ve run across London to get the patent filed as it would’ve been faster than the post.
Maybe this is a bit romantic as not many watch patents were first filed in the UK, but maybe there’s some truth in it.
It makes me smile nonetheless.
Hopefully it made you smile too.
Code41 Introduces the Mecascape Pocket Watch
I never intended for pocket watches to become a recurring theme on 3-Watch Thursday, but it’s starting to go that way.
Yesterday, SJX shared the release of the Mecascape Pocket Watch from Code41.
To me, it’s either a really large pocket watch, or a small-ish desk clock. That said, it’s visually interesting with it’s skeletonised bridges giving big RM 020 vibes.
I love it, but it uses a heavily reconfigured watch movement, which is great until you notice the balance wheel is tiny!
I don’t know if I can unsee it :((
For me, more modern pocket watches is only a good thing and you can check it out here.
That’s all from me this week!
Hope you have a great Thursday-Friday-Weekend and I’ll see you next week.
It’s a very interesting timepiece. Definitely not a pocket watch, more like a travel clock if you wish to list it as portable.
