Good morning team,
Happy Thursday!
Lots to get through this week (more than 3 things!!!), so let’s get straight into it.
Highlights: Sotheby’s Hong Kong Fine Watches Online
I have a habit of recommending auction catalogue highlight articles, but given I don’t work in watches I think often it’s best left to the professionals.
That said given it’s not quite the run-up to auction season yet, I was surprised to see this article over at SJX by Russell Sheldrake on the highlights of Sotheby’s Hong Kong.
Articles such as these provide a great learning opportunity for things I haven’t seen before, particularly given this is a Hong Kong auction there is a tendency for more modern pieces (as shown by @siemswatches).
Personally, I’m excited to see the Vacheron Constantin Mercator (top right) as a few have sold recently over at Subdial and Watch Brothers London.
May, Clarkson, Hammond Poorly and Well Aged Moments
Ok hear me out here.
Somehow I ended up on this video down a massive YouTube rabbit hole. I’m not a huge Top Gear fan so this is a bit odd.
But at 7:40 they start talking about the Bugatti Veyron and joking about how a watch for it was released before the car.
I didn’t recognise the watch as a Jacob & Co as the one that is often seen, so I did some searching and found it was made by Parmigiani.
The more you know I guess.

An Earnest Exploration Of Hublot, The World’s Most Polarizing Watch Brand
I don’t know how I missed this article a month or so ago over at Hodinkee, but given a Hodinkee X Hublot collaboration is set to release today (13/07/23) I can’t help but feel a bit cynical about the article.
I personally believe it’s an excellent piece of writing with lots of great photography and hats off to Sarah Miller for it, but releasing an article hyping a brand that many many people dislike right before releasing a collab with them? Kinda sus.
Ultimately, this line from the article holds true:
Hublot does not give a shit about someone not liking one of their watches.
And to that I say, fair enough.
Go give it a read. I certainly learnt a lot.
Watch Spotting At The 2023 Henley Royal Regatta
As mentioned in last week’s issue, I was in attendance at Henley Royal Regatta the week before.
The result was this watch spotting article over at Wind Vintage with a running commentary of my favourite interactions.
The watches were an interesting mix and the blazers were on point as well.
Thanks a lot for reading this week. You may have seen I posted on Threads asking if anyone has good resources on Must de Cartier watches after I watched a reel with some stone-dial Must de Cartier tank watches.
If you do know anything, your support would be hugely appreciated!
Hope you all have a lovely weekend when it comes around.
See you next week,
Owen
Nice work - learning about watches is like peeling an onion. there's always another layer! Must de Cartier well worth looking deeper into
