Your Anger At Watch Media Is Caused By Clickbait…Well Not Really
Clickbait.
It’s something we’ve all grown used to over the last decade. In the constant struggle to grab and retain our attention in modern media, creators and publishers have used ever more extravagant titles to pull us in. Time spent reading or watching is money to the creator, but in a recent article by Fratello apologising to their readers and citing clickbait as a reason for their anger, I question whether it really contributes to the anger in their comments section.
Here’s why clickbait isn’t the cause of anger in watch media.
It’s not that bad.
We’re living in 2022.
Clickbait is now just a part of our everyday lives. Whilst it appears to have calmed since it’s noticeable peak around 2020, it’s still prevalent. Quite honestly most people have a filter for it now.
So an opinion piece by a watch blog? That shouldn’t cause clickbait.
It’s not misleading.
Fratello, as an example, aren’t Buzzfeed or a tabloid newspaper.
While they and others in the mainstream watch media vy for your attention to read their article. In their apology piece, Fratello take some of the blame for the anger saying their clickbait titles mislead the reader into opening an article believing it’s something that it’s not. But, I challenge you to log onto any major watch publication and find a piece of writing titled in a way that is irrelevant to the article. Yes, some titles are vaguer than others, but never truly unrelated or misleading.
Clickbait simply isn’t a big thing in watch media.
It’s a symptom of something else.
No publication is to blame for your anger.
It’s something deeper than the title of their latest article. I’m not going to speculate about the cause of the angry comments sections below articles. It’s nasty and unnecessary. If the author has made a mistake or you disagree then write a considerate reply. They likely spent significant time researching and making the article which should be respected.
Clickbait alone doesn’t cause that much anger. And the authors shouldn’t take any blame for it.
😎 Thanks for reading! :))
