Morning team,
Funnily enough, this week marks one year of sliding into your email inbox with 3 or more watch-related pieces of media every(ish) week.
You’d be forgiven for not noticing as this is only edition #45, however I took a couple of weeks break at Christmas and a month long break towards the end of uni this spring as based my head against a keyboard writing my thesis.
Safe to say this is all behind us now1 and the only foreseeable breaks in scheduling in future is a couple of weeks at Christmas again.
I’m immensely grateful to each and every one of you who reads and supports this passion project. For me it is a great way to share what I have recently been reading and to stay curious.
No final surprises announcing this will become a paid newsletter in one month’s time👀2. At present I don’t see this helping my audience grow further, however if there were to be interest in a paid, longer form auxiliary newsletter, I would entertain it as sometimes I find myself rushing to cobble 3-Watch Thursday together last minute3.
That’s all from me for the intro this week. Next week I’m thinking of running a highlights real of my favourite editions from the last year.
Many thanks to you all, and here’s to the next year of watches and whatever they bring🥂.
Roger Smith Dropping Game on Instagram Stories
Excuse the click bait header, but did anyone else spot this entertaining story from Roger Smith this week.
As he points out this was the watch was the original that he took to George Daniel’s asking to join him as an apprentice.
His request was rejected and he spent the next few years improving with a second watch. This was a far better watch and the rest as they say is history.
I just found it really cool to see that first watch!
Vacheron Constantin It’s Only Time
Throwing things back a few weeks (read: months), there was this article from happy60mins who you might also be familiar with on Instagram.
We haven’t interacted before, yet I’m pretty sure we have a few mutual friends and I wanted to take some time to read their first longform piece on a subject they specialise in…Vacheron Constantin.
A thoroughly enjoyable read from somebody clearly knowledgeable about all things VC, I found myself learning about the vintage Cornes de Vache and watches I didn’t know existed such as the Malte. All this accompanied with the brilliant photography that you would recognise from Instagram.
Go check it out for yourself here and I can’t wait to read more!
Like what you’re reading? Why not share with a watch friend using the button below!
Go on, you know you want to click it 👀
Bezel Journal
This week I discovered a new goldmine of content, the pre-owned watch dealer Get Bezel has a journal called Bezel Journal.
A relatively new release, there’s some general articles on buying submariners etc (*yawns in Rolex*), but there’s a huge range of seriously interesting Q&A articles with celebrities and collectors alike.
Take this one with John Reardon, or this one with Steve Aoki.
Great work, and super entertaining.
The First OxWatch Watch
Now for a little personal story.
I returned home home the other week to clear out my room and my stuff in the attic post uni.
While sorting through the boxes in the loft, I stumbled upon my properly first watch:
I loved this watch to bits and remember picking it in the Argos catalogue years ago. It must’ve been £15-20 or so.
I’d wear it every day and get sad when the battery ran out. I reckon the battery was changed 2 or 3 times under my ownership. Maybe I wore it for 3-4 years? I don’t really know, as time flies when you’re a kid.
The other thing I remember is looking through the Argos catalogue at the other colours and wishing I could have them as well. I feel like saying ‘start ‘em young’, but it’s not really like this is Project Mbappe or anything.
Thank you all for joining this week.
Much like last week there’s been a recent influx of subscribers likely thanks to OT: The Podcast.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend when we get there, and I’ll be back in your inbox next week with 3 more watch related pieces of media to share!
Owen
If you’re interested, I graduate this weekend! Woohoo!!! 🥳
I promise that this isn’t meant as shade, Chris.
If people were paying I would feel a far greater sense of duty to sit down properly each week to deliver value for you. My beige flag is not wanting to let people down lol.
